Integrated Corporate Governance, Risk Management, and Sustainability Summit

August 09, 2019
New World Hotel, Makati City

The evidence is all around us –

  • Extreme weather driven by climate change
  • Scarcity of resources as population grows to 9 billion in 2050 and a billion of which entering the middle class who would want more of everything
  • Legal and social pressures would require radical transparency and disclosures
  • And a lot more.

And because of these evidences – there is a demand for corporations to align its activities with

the society’s drive to build a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable economy.  This call is further strengthened when in 2015 all 193 member states of the United Nations adopted a plan for achieving a better future for all – Agenda 2030, where the 17 Sustainable Development Goal are at its core, lay out a plan over the next 15 years to end extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet.

More than the duty of pursuing profit, the Board of Directors and the CEO are tasked to pursue longevity of the enterprise which involves enhancement of competitive advantage over time, brand and reputation management, and continued relevance to its key stakeholders.

Shifts in the behavior of key stakeholders such as:

  • Employees are choosing to work for companies who are rated as sustainable organizations
  • Customers are increasingly scrutinizing products and services and are more likely to buy from sustainable companies
  • Communities are stricter in providing the social license
  • Institutional investors are channeling funds into sustainable businesses
  • The public sector is reviewing, crafting and implementing regulations that will address social and global challenges
  • The general public at large is increasingly looking at the corporates to make use of their untapped potential and resources to fill some gaps left by the public sector.

The shift in the behavior of the corporate’s key stakeholders requires evaluation of how risks are managed, opportunities explored, organizations structured, strategies aligned, disclosures communicated and investment principles expanded.

To remain relevant, it is imperative that we integrate sustainability into risk management and corporate governance.
