Corporate Social Responsibility

"It is when business does what it does best - finding solutions to the needs of the community - that corporate social responsibility can be truly strategic and sustainable. By using our strengths, we can have a greater impact on development and become real agents of changes in improving the quality of life of the less privileged." - Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

For 175 years, Ayala has demonstrated unwavering commitment to the Philippines. Ayala's major investments have always been in the Philippines and its business focus has always been on enhancing the lives of Filipinos.

Today, Ayala remains committed to act responsibly in its interactions with all stakeholders: from investors to its own employees; from business partners to other business groups; from credit rating agencies to regulatory entities; from suppliers to customers; from nongovernmental organizations to local communities.

Ayala believes that by doing well as a business and by engaging proactively with its stakeholders, it does not only create value for its shareholders but also make a lasting and positive contribution to national development.

A history of social involvement

The philanthropic fervor that began in the 1860s with Margarita Roxas de Ayala, who helped establish a school for girls, spurred Col. Joseph and Mercedes McMicking to create in 1961 the Filipinas Foundation (the precursor of Ayala Foundation) as a formal channel for promoting education and the arts and undertaking social development projects.

Today, Ayala's social endeavors remain unparalleled in sustained depth and scope. Through Ayala Foundation, Ayala helps to enable people to realize their full potential through social development projects; environmental programs; programs to give the less privileged access to information technology; support for schools; and initiatives to promote the culture and the arts.

In many of its social involvements, Ayala collaborates with Filipino and international institutions, government, and other business groups, to extend the reach of successful programs or to take on larger issues or projects of national significance.

Ayala executives, in their personal as well as corporate capacities, have been at the forefront of socially beneficial partnerships, including Children's Hour, Worldwide Fund for Nature-Philippines, Habitat for Humanity, Text2Teach, and GILAS, or Gearing up Internet Literacy and Access for Students.

Ayala encourages employees to contribute to these projects and other chosen causes with their personal time and resources. In the process, its people become deeply motivated advocates and supporters of Ayala's corporate social responsibility programs.

Ayala Social Initiatives-The 3Es

Ayala brings to the practice of corporate social responsibility the same forward-looking perspective and empowering leadership that it applies to its corporate strategy.

Ayala companies have great potential to touch the lives of Filipinos through their products and services as much as their corporate social responsibility programs. Aspects of these businesses have been increasingly aligned to fulfill a dual role of helping to address social concerns.

In 2007, the Ayala group began to focus its efforts on the three areas of education, environment, and entrepreneurship. Together or as individual companies, the Ayala group aims to deliver tangible results in these critical areas and contribute to poverty reduction and national development.
